You’re not here by accident. You didn’t just wander in off the street one Sunday morning, go up to the platform, pick up an instrument or microphone, and start worshiping. Something happened in your life before you ever became part of a worship team.
That something was a calling.
You may have felt something deep inside but not understood what it was. You may have been drawn to music at an early age but not really understood why. You may have felt a drawing of the Spirit during a deep time of worship but had no words to describe it.
But something happened in your life that pulled you into the ministry of worship and that’s why your here tonight.
You aren’t here just because of your musicianship. You’re not here because a pastor asked you to lead worship. And you’re not here just because you want to serve somewhere in the Church.
You are here because you are called by God to serve here.  And because you are called by God, you’re responsible for the gifts God has given you to use in this ministry – gifts that must be stewarded through discipline.
And as you steward your gifts, they flow from you as your ministry to God, to the Church and to the lost.
This is what we’ll be talking about the next few minutes: we’re going to look at how God called us, how we should steward this calling and how the calling flows through us and ministers to others.
Worship: Our Calling
His calling is personal.
“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’â€
We see in this verse that the calling was personal for Barnabas and Saul. The Lord called them by name. It was a very specific and clear calling.
But God calls us in different ways. Do you remember how God called you into this ministry? Was there a specific experience? A date you can remember? Or was it a gradual sequence of events that led to a logical conclusion that this was your place of service?
Our callings are usually right in line with our gifts, which leads us to the next point.
He equips those He calls.
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.†1 Peter 1:3
One of the ways we know that God has called us is through the gifts He gives us. When we sense that deep well of worship, praise and thanksgiving just bursting to be released; when we discover that something spiritually profound happens when we sing; or when we have that desire to play an instrument or are fascinated by a sound board, that’s the first hint of a calling to worship.
We may not realize is right away, but the calling is there like a tiny acorn ready to grow into a great big oak tree.
Story: Starting at Providence Story
As we nurture that tiny acorn of a gift, feed it and water it by taking lessons, learning and practicing, we grow and develop that gift into something God can use.
His divine power gives us what we need to accomplish our calling.

His calling is eternal.
“For God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.†Romans 11:29
“Angels Watching Over Me” Story
God doesn’t give you a gift and take it away. He doesn’t call us to worship ministry and then take the calling away when we make fail. God’s gift and His call are irrevocable. It’s not going away. Sometimes we need to make peace with it. Sometimes we need to refine it. And sometimes we need to embrace it as part of our journey and destiny in Christ.
But the calling is irrevocable and it waits for us to be obedient and good stewards.
His calling is personal. His calling comes with equipping. His calling is eternal.
