Worship: Our Discipline
Worship is a discipline. Worship is not something we should take lightly. As our calling it must be stewarded. Even if God has gifted us with a beautiful voice, to play an instrument or mix sound, we need to discipline ourselves to be excellent in our calling.
And to do that we have to DO something. Discipline requires us to do, to learn, to accomplish, to progress.
Let’s look at these scriptures and how they require us to do something.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.†Mark 12:30
“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.â€Â James 4:8
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.â€â€Â Matthew 18:20
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.†Colossians 3:23
As worshipers, we have gifts. Those gifts need to mature. We do that by doing something: taking lessons, studying, reading, rehearsing, spending time in the practice room, reading sound board manuals, attending seminars like this.
What people see on the platform on a Sunday morning is the result of hours and hours of time spent disciplining ourselves. God gives us the initial gift, but it’s our responsibility to nurture it, develop it and grow it.
All of you here tonight have more than likely done some preparation to be a part of a worship team. What I’d like you to do now is share what kind of preparation you have had so far and where you feel you need to take that next step in stewarding your gift. Be as specific as you can be: ‘I need to be better at reading music’. ‘I need to learn how to breathe better when I sing.’ ‘ I need to learn more flow techniques when I lead worship so that my transitions are smoother.’
Share in your group one area in which you would like to be more disciplined in your worship and how you think you should make that happen.
